The WorkBench

This Guild F4 arrived with a footprint where the customer's buddy had crushed it with his boot. Some of the spruce top was missing and the top bracing was splintered.

As it's a medium priced instrument, I gave the customer the option to repair the existing damage to keep his cost down. He informed me his friend was picking up the bill.. so here we go with a new top.

Guild does not offer replacement tops, so this replacement would have to be constructed from blank stock. The first step was to completely remove the damaged top and top bracing. I was careful to leave the kerfed lining as well as the outer black binding complete and undisturbed.

I salvaged the original top and filled in the missing edges with autobody filler. After checking that this top fits back into the sides I will use it as a template to cut the replacement top.

Here is the completed top with new bracing.

The new top is final fitted then glued down. Notice the fingerboard from the 14th fret and up has been removed to allow for a complete top. My preference would be to remove the neck completely then glue the entire neck after the top has been installed but the cost was prohibitive for this repair.

Here it is completed with a new pickguard and rubbed finish. The original bridge was reused.
